My Top Products To Combat A Dry Scalp

Did you know that having dandruff and having a dry scalp is two completely different things?

I went through a stage of suffering from a dry and itchy scalp. It got to the point where I was on my 10th brand, trying to find a fix to the problem. After doing some research wondering why none of these anti-dandruff shampoos were working, it turned out I didn’t have dandruff – just a dry scalp!

This all made sense as I have always had dry skin and, as a child suffered from a lot of eczema. So, I thought there must be a way of fixing the problem just like I would if it was on my skin.

I did a little more research and discovered that there is an ingredient in nearly all shampoos called SLS. This is a foaming agent in the shampoo which removes dirt and grease from the hair – which is great…or is it? Some people experience problems with this as it can have an impact on the protective layers of the scalp causing it to become very dry and itchy.

So, an SLS free shampoo may be something you want to try out if you are finding regular anti-dandruff or moisturising shampoos just aren’t doing the trick.

On my hunt for the right shampoo, I came across a few products that I keep coming back to and, I will tell you why below. All product names are linked to the website where they can be purchased.

  1. Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment – This product has been my go-to life saver. It had never occurred to me before..when our skin is dry we exfoliate the dead skin away, so why would we not do the same when our head is dry? That is exactly what this product does; it scrubs away the dead skin which is great if you have build up or a flaky scalp. I scrub this into my scalp when my hair is dry and leave it on for 5-10 minutes before washing it all out with the same brand of shampoo. I only use this treatment once a week if my head is bad otherwise once a month just to get rid of any build up of products. It is a little bit pricey for a hair treatment, but it is the only product I found that worked so it was definitely worth it.
  2. Espa Purifying Shampoo – This shampoo is my ‘expensive’ shampoo that I treat myself with when I want a pamper. It smells just like a spa which is why I love it so much. But, more importantly, it is free from SLS and SLES which is another reason why it is my go-to shampoo for when my scalp is dry and irritated.
  3. Lush Shampoo Bar – It doesn’t look as though they sell the one I use anymore but I have linked a similar one which is called NEW. I actually have more than one of the shampoo bars and love using them. They smell great, are mainly made of natural ingredients and most importantly, the whole brand is completely cruelty free which I love. Tip – These shampoo bars are fantastic for travelling if you are tight on liquid allowance or weight.
  4. Superdrug Coconut Oil – Coconut oil, as we all know is a great moisturiser. This can be used as an over-night treatment to really hydrate the scalp. Just don’t make the same mistake I made the first time I used it and, end up at a restaurant with greasy hair! The trick is to rub the shampoo into your hair before wetting it, that way it lifts all the oil off as shampooing when wet just doesn’t do the job! If you are interested in shopping cruelty free then Superdrug is another company which pride themselves in that – all their own products are certified cruelty free by the Leaping Bunny Programme.

Hope you all enjoy hydrating your scalps and keep up to date below for future posts!
